Background of the Study:
Traditional folktales in Ikorodu Local Government have long served as a medium for transmitting moral lessons, cultural values, and historical narratives. These oral traditions are integral to the community’s heritage and have traditionally played a role in the informal education of children (Akinyemi, 2023). With the advent of modern education systems, the relevance of these folktales is being reexamined, as educators seek innovative ways to integrate indigenous knowledge into formal curricula (Adeyemi, 2024). Proponents argue that traditional folktales enrich modern education by fostering critical thinking, creativity, and cultural awareness (Olatunji, 2025). This study examines the potential of traditional folktales as educational tools, exploring their capacity to enhance literacy, moral development, and intercultural understanding. By bridging traditional narratives with modern pedagogical approaches, the research aims to highlight the enduring value of folktales in contemporary educational settings (Akinyemi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Modern education in Ikorodu is increasingly neglecting traditional folktales, risking the loss of cultural heritage and moral instruction embedded in these narratives. This neglect may lead to a disconnect between students and their indigenous cultural roots (Adeyemi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the role of traditional folktales in informal education.
To assess their potential contribution to modern educational curricula.
To propose methods for integrating folktales into formal education.
Research Questions:
How are traditional folktales currently utilized in education?
What benefits do folktales offer to modern learners?
What strategies can effectively integrate folktales into the curriculum?
Research Hypotheses:
Traditional folktales enhance moral and cultural education.
Integrating folktales into modern curricula improves student engagement.
Innovative pedagogical methods can bridge traditional narratives with formal education.
Significance of the Study:
This study emphasizes the value of traditional folktales in enriching modern education, promoting cultural continuity, and enhancing cognitive and moral development among students (Olatunji, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the relevance of traditional folktales in modern education in Ikorodu Local Government, Lagos State.
Definitions of Terms:
Traditional Folktales: Oral narratives passed down through generations.
Modern Education: Formal educational systems with contemporary curricula.
